From Alfred Ward... 2013 It's a Wrap! Here Comes 2014!!!

So 2013 is ending well,  I survived a pretty bad car accident after leaving a show a couple weeks ago with no injuries, but it really let me know that I do have to take better care of myself. Over working yourself with little sleep and poor nutrition isn't good for anyone. I can't believe that I'm in my 30's and I'm still trying to convince myself to follow my own advice, sheesh. Outside of that this month has been awesome! For most of the first half of the month I served as the AD/PA/Craft Services/Transportation/AC (Maybe) on a film production with Burning Mirror Films. Honestly I was in waaay over my head but I managed to get though it and not stress out a lot. I can't say that I learned a lot about shooting a film from the cinematographer's point of view, but I do have an appreciation for the planning phase and people/resource management needed to pull something like that off smoothly and I'll be even more ready for the next project.

In stand up all month has been solid. I got to share that stage with Alex Koll in a Fantastic show at Comedy Whatever at the Alchemy Tavern, a great guy and a great comedian. Honestly I'm still just glad to be part of shows, any show headliner or not, you can ask me for 5 minutes or 30 minutes, I don't mind. It's not that I don't think I'm any good, or that I don't care, I just can't believe it. It's all still unreal to me.

Oh yeah I have a show lined up in Huntsville Alabama on 1/10/2014, I lived in that city for over 11 years so it'll be fun to get back up there for a while. If I leave early enough maybe I'll get to stop by Birmingham or sneak away to Nashville as well for a night. That's all wishful thinking for right now, just stay tuned in case it happens and I'll announce it. Hopefully I'll get a couple mini tours together next year and get to hit up a few more stages, then things may become a bit more real to me, until then I'll see you at the open mics!

November to December in the Life of Ward

Whoa I just realized I hadn't blogged in quite a while. I had an awesome time on 11/16 and I have two more shows coming up for this year. Outside of that I've been hitting open mics like crazy. Don't get it twisted folks, I'm an open mic kinda guy. My next two shows are great lineups, I can't wait to share the stage this weekend with an awesome bunch and close out my year with a huge show on 12/14 and get ready for 2014... There maybe a surprise in December, I'll keep you posted!

October 2013 Baby! Headlining, TAG, Working with A Jew and a Black Guy twice!

October has been fun so far, I opened for a Jew and a Black Guy down in Perdido Key FL, filled in at Comedy Whatever due to a cancellation, rocked the mic at TAG for the first time in months, ended up headlining about a week later in Orange Beach at Happy Harbor due to a tropical storm delay, and now this weekend I'm featuring on a show with A Jew and a Black Guy again LOL. However this time it's in Mobile AL at Comedy Whatever at the Alchemy Tavern. I wonder if I should dust off my material about needing a Jewish woman in my life. Preferably a Jewish MILF. Only time will tell.

Fun Night with Brent Condon, Alfred Ward, Mike Honore, Robert Rau, and Steven Street!

Comedy Whatever 10/5/2013 — with Colton DeMonte, Matt White, Steven Marcinowski, Louis Bishop, William Masters, Perry Strong, and Alfred Ward.

Guess who did Standup in New Orleans! The Howling Wolf Den @ Comedy Beast!

We came, we saw, we had a great time! So I rolled into New Orleans (Nawlins) with the infamous William Masters in tow not knowing what to expect and we just had a blast. I took a wrong turn and we did have a quick detour through the 9th Ward but I felt at home, no not really, but it wasn't so bad. In fact I was glad to get a point of reference so I could do my Prichard jokes. All over it was an awesome night. I recommend anyone who gets the opportunity to visit New Orleans to attend one of the shows, Andrew & Cyrus run a tight ship.

Since I started doing standup my goal has been to become a consistently good comic on stage, none of that kill the stage or bomb out all or nothing crap. That's not saying I want to be average, I just want to be able to do great night in and night out with any crowd and not be pigeonholed. Shows like this are really helping me along the way. Since I've accepted the label of a comic I don't worry about being funny, I just have a good time. If you're having a good time the funnies will follow.

I've kicked off a fundraising campaign on indiegogo.com for the summer to sell a few books and DVDs as well as test out the platform. I hope it goes well and I can tour eight to ten cities this fall. I can already but it'd be nice to have gas money. So with the fundraiser going for a couple months and me spending as much time as possible with my son for the summer I'm going to cut back on hitting five or so open mics or shows a week to one, so if you see me announce I'm on a line up please come. Hopefully I can use this extra time to work on some scripts or a new novel. Now it'd be cool to have a new novel ready for the winter... Enough about me, I'll be doing a full post about the fundraiser later... Time to go play with my kid, I feel like today may call for Space Pirates ARRRRRR!

Two Years Back Home, I Never Saw This Coming... But It's Been Good.

So it's been two years since returning to the Gulf Coast. First things first at least I can say that I no longer hate myself for it. In fact that's a quite recent development. I've had a lot of fun, met some really cool people, become a comic, performed spoken word, theater, and even film. Hell, I even complied another book and produced two DVD's. All in all I must say that I've been productive. Of course these things weren't new to me, I was already a prolific author and performer in Northern Alabama before arriving. During my brief stay in the Atlanta area I even managed to get a television appearance for spoken word and it's where I got my official start doing stand up. But this was different, Mobile Alabama is home (Prichard) and the place I had vowed never to live in again. So I guess it was an appropriate as place as any to hit the proverbial 'rock bottom'. All that I knew was that I wanted stage time and I got it. I just wanted to say thanks to my home town for being home and making me feel like me again!

I moved back here after it seemed as if I had failed at everything. A missive tornado outbreak triggered my need to move to find work, my marketing degree was damn near worthless, I couldn't hold a dead end job, couldn't get hired to another decent job, I had already abandoned entrepreneurship for corporate America and had been fired, I was going through a divorce, losing my family, and for the second time in less than a year, my home. My credit score had gone from 700 to the 400's, $200,000 in debt hung over my head, a trail of broken leases, and countless unpaid bills and final notices. I could barely look myself in the mirror and that was before garnishments were enacted which seize over 50% of my wages before I see a dime. Everytime I seemed to be doing a bit better there was yet another setback. But all things must come to an end and accordingly so did my foolishness.

You can't keep a good man down and I decided to embrace comedy and film. Entirely new avenues of expression for me, yes I had dabbled but no pursued them in depth. I struggled, I was booed, I begged, and ranted. They had little to nothing to do with my previous troubles, in fact they were the next steps in my long term goals as if I hadn't experiences any setbacks at all. With each minor victory I saw that I wasn't a failure and I emerged from the storms of my past. It started with a single laugh, to ONE youtube view, until now I expect to get invited to perform, to be able to sell a product I made, and to gain views for my efforts. Yes I still have my other problems but not one in my mind or spirit, I snapped out of my funk once I noticed just how ugly I had become to friends and family. No, I still don't like to let to many people get close because I know what it feels like to be used for your experience and resources and tossed aside, but I know that I don't have to be a jerk about it. Just being assertive about where you stand and what you expect in return helps that. Besides no one has to go out of their way to make people alienate them. Being successful is it's own reward and you can leave those stresses to those people who want to stay in hell. I know this isn't funny or poetic and that's fine with me. I'm also an essayist, novelist, playwright, and screen writer. So the next time you have an adult drink, lift up your glass, and toast to better days and know that you're toasting with me!

-Alfred Ward

P.S. I'd like it if you'd go buy my new DVD now...

My new comedy DVD "Past Due" Get a copy today!

I finally settled on a name for the new DVD, Past Due. I originally planned for it to be a show this past March which was to be recorded and made into my first DVD with standup but that didn't happen. Luckily I had some buddies capture some footage of me at a recent show which was pretty good so this DVD was born. It features a new animated It's Life and That's Fred episode not released to the web as well as the stand up footage, which also has some clips of an additional two more shows. I've also included the full length Internet Dating documentary and a couple more short films for 60 minutes of laughs. That's thirty more than expected because I wasn't going to include the documentary, but it turned out okay. Okay I expect a little head scratching at some WTH moments, but you know that's my style. I'll be selling them for $10, yes only $10, but that's because I make them by hand otherwise it would be $50 and wrapped in 24k gold leaf. That's enough dreaming because there's none of that fancy bulk order stuff this time and of course the monies go towards paying bills, I have a family to feed, and need gas to go from show to show.

A little preview:

Monday's Open Mic at Bojangles!

What else can I say? I love to hang out and that's how the open mic at Bojangles is shaping up. We're on the cutting edge of funny, pushing the envelope, and taking comedy to where it's never been before. Okay we drink beer and play around on a microphone but it could be worse, we could be without a microphone. I came with some notes and a list but like so many of these types of nights I wound up just going on a venting rampage. It was great! This is comedy! I hope BFG recorded it... I'll have to ask...

Alfred Ward's Irreverent Documentary Series Episode One: Internet Dating starring ET, Ricardo, & SquareTite

Recently during stand up performances at TAG and again at The Alchemy Tavern it dawned upon me that little in regards to research had been done on the dirty underbelly of meeting chicks online for the purpose of knocking boots. Please join me in a round of investigative reporting that attempts to get in touch with the internet as never seen before! Uncensored and with little to no editing. This is a real as it gets, or not...

What an AWESOME Comedy Show @ Island Strikz In Gulfport Mississippi!

In the midst of my brief hiatus from comedy to do some much needed film work I received the opportunity to make up for canceling a show at Big Mike's in MS by featuring for Tommy Rustin at Island Strikz (5/4/2013). The crowd was awesome! For a moment I thought I was about to be heckled as had most that went before me but nope, in fact they did that scary thing crowds do sometimes in which they get so quiet you can hear yourself breathing. Then you say something and they laugh. I've been told that it means you have their attention, but it still scares the crap outta me when I notice it. Sometimes I just want to yell out "Fuck me, pull out your phones, make calls, go to the bar, order 12 drinks, and bring me one!" It was my first show in Mississippi and I'm really glad everyone enjoyed hearing my anecdotes about homosexual insects, Vietnam, and black supremacy. I'll be back!

The Oreo Comedy City Wide Tour #Done or Whatever

Getting to do stand up at five times at four venues in seven days isn't bad for the Mobile AL area, of course I'm used to doing about three a week on average. Things kicked off with a great night at the TAG bar and ended a few blocks away, seven days later at Alchemy Tavern. I also made it to Satori's open mic and then comedy night at Shooter's, in Pensacola, as part of the Mobile Comic Convoy. Alchemy of course was two nights 4/26-27, Dave Stone headlined both nights as part of his Rambling Van Tour (www.davestonecomedy.com). All of it was tons of fun but left me drained by the end of the week, not to mention I only sold two books all week LOL. But thanks to my buddy Steven (comedian BFG) I finally got some new footage of my on stage performance and it's improved since the last time it was recorded a year ago. I plan on putting that footage on DVD along with my sketches and finally having a true comedy DVD, FINALLY!

Things have been so far so good this year. I want to do more comedy and film and it's getting there. I just got booked and lined up for my first spot in a show in New Orleans! That's why I tell everyone if you're interested in this just keep coming out. Yes some people are geniuses and seem to be naturals at making people laugh while the rest of us are workhorses, we may not be pretty but we get the job done. Believe me it's not always pretty but the end result is the same. Early on I had to cancel a couple out of town gigs but I kept on plugging away working stages and I'm going to go back to those rooms when the time is right. Hopefully I'll get to go to quite a few more cities soon.

Thanks for staying tuned and please visit the online store!

Alchemy Tavern Tonight! Dave Stone night one of two! Come make history!

Tonight is set to be great! I'll be a stand up feature at Alchemy on the first regular Friday night show so it's like I'm making history. Dave Stone (see flyer below) is the headliner. If you had told me a year ago I'd be opening up for a guy like Dave Stone I would've grabbed a rubber band because it's time to take your balls, YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!!! Awh It's all good fun, I hope the people come on down to see some microphone stuff and we can keep up the momentum that's making Mobile and the Gulf Coast pretty cool places to live and hang out. I'm also looking forward to catching the other guys on stage, I don't know all of them yet so it's going to be fun. My buddy Tipcey Tiff is hilarious so I know its going to be a blast. So I know what you want to do tonight, but come downtown first.

On Thursday there I was hanging out at Shooters in P'Cola doing the open mic, Matt is the host. I was there for the first time and I couldn't read my notes. Fuck the notes! LOL No seriously I couldn't read them. But it was a great kick off for four days of comedy! Everyone did a great job and by the end of the night, when I went up, there were only two people who were not comics in the building. It was great to work out 90% new microphone stuff. Here I am rolling with the Mobile Comic Convoy!

The Oreo Tour hits TAG!

Had a great time rockin the mic at TAG! Joe Paige hosted and every comic ripped it! Every sunday at 9pm its a great Comedy Showcase!

So my round about town in Mobile AL tour kicked off great! I'm at home eating some fried chicken for the first time in 5 months and I swear there must be some drugs in this chicken. Anything that tastes this good must be bad for you! That's besides the point. I didn't sell any books but I'll be back. The crowd was great and I hope that you come out to see me next time.  I'm not sure if the Wednesday spot is going to happen but I'll keep you up to date. Please remember to check out the online store and if you'd like to have me visit your hometown send me a message, I'll find the closest comedy spot and use your message to make the owner give me stage time. Have your cousins, uncles, aunts, mom, dad, and kids send messages to so they'll think I'm going to pack the house. That's how this gets done people!

PEACE!

Blogging on the go!

I just downloaded blogger mobile so I could make great quick updates while I camp out in my car... cool!
